Trojan Simulator – Put Your Security Software Solution to The Test
Review by on
Trojans are nasty pieces of work. They sneak onto your computer and then install malicious software onto it, without your realizing it – that’s one example of what Trojans can do. It is important that you keep your PC safe from Trojans, and from other security threats. The way you can do this is by getting a properly good security software solution – or antivirus.

How do you know if your antivirus application can protect your PC from Trojans? Trojan Simulator, an application developed by Mischel Internet Security Ltd, aims to provide an answer to that question. As its name so adequately points out, this application simulates a Trojan; your antivirus application should detect it. If it doesn’t, then your PC isn ot protected from Trojans.

Trojan Simulator’s Read Me file says the following:
“When you run Trojan Simulator, you will be presented with a screen showing some informational text about Trojan Simulator. Clicking the Install button will install the demo Trojan on your system. The demo Trojan simulates a real Trojan server by hiding its main window and writing an autostart entry to the registry. Clicking the Uninstall button removes the autostart entry from the registry and then unloads the demo Trojan server from memory. While the demo Trojan is running, you get a chance to observe the behavior of any installed security software.”

But if you have a properly good antivirus application then you shouldn’t be able to get there. On a Windows machine with Eset NOD32 Antivirus 4, the antivirus application detected the Trojan when Firefox finished downloading it. When I tried to unzip the archive, the antivirus detected the Trojan and automatically deleted it. This is proof that NOD32 offers adequate Trojan protection.

Now about the “Safe to Install” badge (upper right hand corner). Normally that badge is meant to show that the application has been scanned and poses no threat to you. In this case it is meant to show that Trojan Simulator is indeed a threat and it is detected as a Trojan.

Pros
  • Lightweight download (313KB)
  • Freeware

Cons
  • None that I could think of
